§ 11.04.200. FIRE MAINS AND FIRE HYDRANTS.

  • A. Fire mains and fire hydrants shall be installed on private or public property as approved by the Fire Chief or his or her authorized representative, where city main and hydrant placement adjacent to the property does not provide the required minimum fire main and fire hydrant coverage as set forth in this chapter and as listed in subsections A(1) through (10) of this section.
    1. Plans shall be approved by the Fire Department before installation of the fire mains or fire hydrants. The installation of fire mains and fire hydrants shall also meet the Lake Havasu City Water Division specifications.
    2. Fire main size shall be of sufficient size to supply required fire flow, but shall be such that no deadend fire main is less than 6-inch diameter and no more than 500 feet long. LOOPED shall mean that the fire main is tied into an approved city water main in at least 2 places with maximum separation, but not less than 200 feet apart.
    3. Fire hydrants shall be located within 150 feet of the most remote exterior point of all buildings or hazardous areas. Fire hydrants shall be placed in locations approved by the Fire Chief or his or her authorized representative. The hydrant shall be visible and within 6 feet of the curb or other vehicle access point.
    4. Fire hydrant spacing shall be approximately 500 feet apart in single-family residential developments and shall be approximately 300 feet apart in all other developments. The distance between fire hydrants shall be computed along the path of travel the fire truck must meet.
    5. A fire hydrant shall be within 50 feet of all Fire Department connections of fire sprinkler and standpipe systems. An exception can be made with the approval of the Fire Chief.
    6. All fire hydrants shall be standard Lake Havasu City spec hydrants with two, 2-1/2-inch male outlets and one, 4-1/2-inch male outlet with NST threads. The height of all fire hydrants shall be such that the centerline of the 4-1/2-inch outlet is not lower than 15 inches above grade and no higher than 30 inches above grade.
    7. A clear space of 3 feet in all directions for accessible use shall be maintained around fire hydrants.
    8. Vehicle parking shall be prohibited within the area 15 feet in front of and within 15 feet in both directions of the front of the fire hydrant. Vehicles parked in violation shall be issued a notice of violations. For hydrants that are set back from the curb, the 15-foot clearance shall be taken from the curbline.
    9. All required fire mains and fire hydrants shall be installed and operational before any combustible construction begins or before any combustible materials are brought onto the site. Fire hydrants shall be maintained in an accessible condition at all times.
    10. Fire mains on private property shall require detector check meters and/or post indicator valves be installed at the point of connection to city water mains in accordance with Water Division specifications.
